Grammatical Issues ofIdiomatic Expressions Interpreting

Weshall now take a close look at some peculiarities ofphrasal expressions. An significant fact that must be underlined is that idioms are not only colloquial expressions, as many people think. They may be found in formal style and in slang. They can be found in poetry or in the language of Dickens and newspapers.
Idioms are used widely, that is why an experienced English Russian translator is simply obliged to master certain techniques for translation of idioms from English to Russian, and for their translation from Russian to English.
What, then, is an idiomatic expression? We can say that an idiomatic expression is some quantity of elements which, taken together, mean something special from the individual words of the idiomatic expression when they are found separately. The way in which the expressions are put together is sometimes weird, illogical or even grammatically wrong. These are the individual peculiarities of some idioms. Other idiomatic expression are completely regular and logical in their grammatical aspects and vocabulary. Because of the special features of certains idiomatic expressions, we shall study the idiomatic expressions in general and we often cannot change any part of it (except perhaps, only the grammatical form of the verb).
English is very rich in idioms. In fact, it is hard to speak or write English language without using idiomatic expressions. An English native speaker is sometomes not aware that he is using an idiom; perhaps he does not even realize that an idiom which he applies is grammatically wrong. A non-native learner makes the correct use of idiomatic English one of his main aims, and the fact that some idioms are illogical or grammatically wrong causes him difficulty. Only careful study and exact learning will help.
It cannot be explained why a particular idiom has developed an unusual arrangement or choice of phrases. The idiom has been fixed by long usage as is sometimes seen from the vocabulary.
